Staff Member Spotlight: Debbie

August 7, 2017

One of the reasons working at Health Partners Free Clinic is so amazing is that we are a family.  The small staff is very close knit, loving, caring and respectful. Everyone knows what each other is going through; knows their families and backstories, is happy for each other’s achievements and empathetic to each other’s hard times.

All of us have family that will stop in and say ‘”Hello” occasionally, but Debbie Danielson, this week’s featured staff member, has a family that is a customary feature of HPFC, and they are just as amazing as their matriarch.  Debbie has answered a few questions to help us get to know them a little bit better!

What is your favorite family tradition?

My favorite family tradition is one that goes way back to when my grandparents on my dad’s side had Christmas every year with my dad’s four siblings and all the cousins.  My grandmother made pawnhaus for Christmas brunch every year.  My parents also made it every year for myself and my siblings and our children and now

I make it every year for my children and grandchildren.  Not all the in-laws like it, and not all the grandkids like it but everyone likes the tradition and expects to have it on the table every year.

Among your friends or family, what are you famous for?

My kids say I’m famous for my macaroni salad and buckeyes.

What do you like most about your family?

What I like most about my family is that we all get along and everyone enjoys spending time with each other.  I am also happy that all my children with the exception of the youngest (who isn’t married yet) are happily married and have given me wonderful grandchildren.  They attend church and have faith in God.  I think that’s pretty important.

What is your favorite family vacation?

I’d have to say my favorite family vacation is the year every one of us spent 10 days in Montana.  There’s nothing better as a parent than having all your kids and grandkids in the same place at the same time.  It was WONDERFUL!

What’s your favorite family recipe?

My favorite recipe is a chocolate cake recipe that was passed down from my mom.  When I was about 10 years old my mom entered a contest being sponsored by DP&L.  It was a baking contest.  We didn’t have a lot of extras growing up.  I can’t remember what the winning prize was, but it was something my mom didn’t have that she thought would be helpful in the kitchen.  The chocolate cake won, mom got the prize and we were all thrilled.  Anyway, the chocolate cake is requested for almost every birthday by everyone.

Does your family have a “motto” – spoken or unspoken?

The family motto when I was growing up was “Save some for tomorrow.”  My mother saved everything, probably because her family lived thru the depression and her parents made use of every little thing they had.  I don’t know that my family has a motto, but we use the one I grew up with from time to time.

What is your best family memory?

One of my favorite family memories is this:  Our family has always been very involved in 4-H.  My son Tim and my daughter Liz showed pigs during their 4-H careers and Tim wanted to try farrowing his own pigs one year.  We bought a bred gilt and she of course decided to have her little pigs while my husband Dan was out of town working.  We stayed up with that gilt all night watching her deliver 8 or 9 baby pigs.  That year at the county fair Tim got Reserve Grand Champion barrow with one of those pigs and Liz got Grand Champion gilt, and my husband showed one of them as well and got a division champion.  It was pretty cool to have such high placings from pigs we raised from babies on up.
